Position Description

DEFINITION:
Teaches university transfer courses in Sociology to students in a variety of formats, including online, hybrid, and seated. Courses include Introduction to Sociology, Sociology of the Family, Social Problems, Race and Ethnic Relations, and Social Psychology. This is a full time Sociology Instructor position and requires the faculty member to teach at least 18 hours per semester. This position will begin with the Fall 2024 Semester.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:


  • Receives general supervision from the Chair, Social Sciences
  • Exercises no supervision, but may mentor newer faculty.

 

Duties & Responsibilities (Essential Functions)

ESSENTIAL AND OTHER IMPORTANT FUNCTIONS STATEMENTS:
Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Essential Functions:


  • Provide classroom and/or virtual instruction to students
  • Prepare lesson plans and schedule classroom activities
  • Develop courses according to college design on the common Learning Management System
  • Coordinate adoption of textbooks with other faculty
  • Develop and prepare supplement materials to enhance lectures
  • Develop and prepare tests to evaluate student performance; grade and record individual scores
  • Maintain accurate records of student attendance and performance
  • Maintain and submit all required paperwork in a neat, accurate and timely fashion, including but not limited to: class rosters, registration forms, pay sheets, attendance forms and grade rosters
  • Oversee the implementation of policies and procedures related to required teaching area and in accordance with CFCC policies and guidelines

Other Important Functions:
  • Assess the relevancy and impact of various lessons and recommend improvements as needed
  • Engage in professional development when opportunities arise
  • Oversee and participate in field studies and assignments; travel with students to provide assistance and instruction as appropriate
  • Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned

 

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge of:


  • Classroom instructional techniques and procedures
  • Principles and procedures of academic and instructional techniques and procedures
  • Current trends, research and development in the area of assignment
  • Principles and techniques involved in test development and administration

Ability To:
  • Interpret and apply College goals, objectives, policies, procedures, rules, and regulations
  • Communicate clearly and respectfully, both orally and in writing
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
  • Interpret and apply CFCC goals, objectives, policies, procedures, rules, and regulations
  • Maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for:
    • Making observations
    • Reading and writing
    • Communicating with others
    • Operating assigned equipment
    • Handling varied tasks simultaneously
  • Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities, which may include the following:
    • Standing or sitting for extended periods of time
    • Operating assigned equipment
    • Handling varied tasks simultaneously
    • Bending, stooping, climbing, or lifting up to 50 pounds
  • Maintain mental capacity, which allow the capability of:
    • Making sound decisions
    • Responding to questions
    • Demonstrating intellectual capabilities


EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES:
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Minimum Education/Training:
  • A Masters degree in Sociology from a regionally accredited college or university
Or
  • A Masters degree with at least 18 graduate semester hours in Sociology.

Minimum Experience:
  • None

Preferred Education/Training, Experience, Skills:
  • Prior experience in teaching at post-secondary level is preferred
