Job Description

Position Summary

The Museum of the Coastal Bend is recruiting for a Full Time Intern.  This internship will be paid and will work 8 hours a day, 5 days a week. The internship will take place during Summer 2025 for 58 days. The major project in this internship is cataloging, inventorying, and accessioning the collections. The intern will work under the supervision of the Exhibits and Collections Manager. This is a great opportunity for anyone planning a career in collections management.
Intern will learn and be exposed to:

  • Real world knowledge in collections management
  • Participation in Collections Committee meetings
  • Participation in Advisory Board meetings
The Museum of the Coastal Bend showcases the rich multi-cultural heritage of the mid-coastal region of Texas. In 2009,the Museum of the Coastal Bend achieved Certified Curatorial Facility status, a designation awarded by the Texas Historical Commission to only seventeen institutions int he state. The certification ensures that facilities meet current museum standards pertinent to the care and management of held-in-trust collections.


Duties & Responsibilities

Specific duties include, but may not be limited to :

  • Cataloguing/Inventorying/Accessioning artifacts
  • Photograph artifacts
  • Catalogue/Inventory collections
  • Data entry into CMS PastPerfect
  • Accession artifacts/collections
  • Match artifacts with accession records
  • NotifyandassistExhibitsandCollectionsManagertofixanydiscrepancies
  • Create condition reports on artifacts when needed

Qualifications

  • Current graduate student working towards a Masters in Museum Studies, Public History, History, Archaeology, or related field
  • Knowledge of museum best practices for artifact handling
  • Proficient computer skills
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Self-directed and able to work without supervision
  • Energetic and eager  to tackle projects
  • Excellent critical thinking/problem solving skills
  • Experience with PastPerfect CMS preferred but not required
  • Must be able to lift 25 pounds

Physical Demands

Work is generally performed in a variety of environments: office, interior operational settings, and outdoors, with frequent interruptions and irregularities in the work schedule.  Frequent walking, standing, climbing, lifting, stooping, or carrying of equipment and materials may be required.  Incumbents may be required to lift and carry up to 30 pounds.  Incumbent may be exposed to extreme temperatures, close quarter situations, high and precarious places, moving mechanical parts, and vibrations.  Incumbents are frequently required to travel between campuses. Will be required to push and pull as part of event set up.   Hearing of light to moderate sound is required by this job. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
