Laboratory Coordinator I

Job Description

Position Summary

Located 45 minutes from the Nations Capital, nestled in a history-rich community of southern Maryland, The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) has been twice named in the top 150 community colleges by the Aspen Institute with academic programs in over 100 disciplines. The hiring salary for this position will be from the min to mid-point of the salary range.

The individual in this position coordinates the daily management of School of STEM and Professional studies laboratories on one or more CSM campuses. The person in this position provides key support for academic science or health programs and courses. This person collaborates with the other laboratory support personnel and faculty and staff to assure the laboratory environment supports the educational and technical needs of the programs and various curricula.

The work schedule for this position is 30 hours per week. Flexibility is required based on course needs. 

The Laboratory Coordinator I Reports to: The Laboratory Director

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

30 % Academic Laboratory Exercise Preparation 

  • Prepares necessary materials and set-ups for assigned laboratory: Prepares health equipment and supplies, chemical reagents and/or biological materials and media.   Follows required aseptic techniques in laboratory preparation.
  • Assists faculty with the selection of appropriate supplies and equipment for laboratory use.
  • Ensures that each laboratory class has the necessary materials prior to the scheduled meeting time. Notifies the Laboratory Director and faculty immediately of any problems with the laboratories. 
  • Serves as a resource to students using the laboratories during practice sessions.

25% Inventory Management
  • Collects, stores, and inventories hazardous waste materials; autoclaves, bacterial cultures and materials.  Tests laboratory safety equipment to make sure that it is functioning.
  • Coordinates supply orders, inventory and storage of all supplies and equipment used in the assigned science laboratories. Notifies the Laboratory Director in a timely manner of laboratory supplies that need to be ordered.  
  • Maintains a chemical inventory and respective Material Safety Data Sheets.  
  • Assures laboratory and supplies are secured and managed in compliance with federal and state regulations. 
  • Maintains a current inventory of equipment and supplies used to facilitate student/faculty interaction. 
  • Contributes to the research, preview and ordering of supplies, equipment, media or software for the science and health laboratories; discusses program/course needs with faculty and submits requests to the Laboratory Director.

25% Collaboration and Departmental Development 
  • Develops and maintains professional relationships to assist faculty with laboratory support.
  • Contributes to orienting, training and assisting faculty in understanding laboratory procedures, routines, and the use of laboratory supplies and equipment.
  • Contributes to the School of STEM and Professional Studies planning process.
  • Contributes to annual budget development in collaboration with the Laboratory Director.
  • Participates in college, school, and program meetings as appropriate.

15% Laboratory Maintenance
  • Coordinates cleaning, maintenance, and repair of all equipment used in the assigned laboratories. Keeps equipment and laboratory in repair by monitoring equipment status and performing routine maintenance and minor repairs. Notifies the Laboratory Director of equipment in need of repair. 
  • Organizes laboratories and performs routine upkeep of prep rooms and laboratory classrooms.   
  • Meets with maintenance, service, and repair professionals, signs service receipts, and receives any instructions.
  • Maintains safe working conditions for students, faculty and other employees.   Ensures proper safety equipment is available and proper safety precautions are practiced in handling hazardous substances.  Advises faculty and staff on specific control measures established to protect employees.

5% Policy and Procedural Development
  • Contributes to the development of policies and procedures related to the safe usage of equipment and laboratory space. Works with the Laboratory Director to create Standard Operating Procedures.  
Additional Duties:
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Education and Training

Required Education and Experience:

  •  Associate degree in a Science or Health related discipline.
  • (2-3) years of relative experience

Preferred Education and Experience:
  •  Bachelor's degree in a Science or Health related discipline.
  • (1-2) years of experience

Minimum Qualifications and Standards Required

  • One to Three years of experience in science or health field.
  • Knowledge of healthcare equipment and supplies
  • Knowledge of basic techniques in microbiology preparation and maintenance of cultures.
  • Knowledge of chemical measurements, calculations, and preparation of chemical solutions.
  • Knowledge of general OSHA regulations pertaining to the use, storage, and disposal of non-hazardous and hazardous materials or substances.
  • Knowledge of standard laboratory procedures.
  • Knowledge of function and utilization of Chemical Hygiene Plan.
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficient in the operation of computer application software.
  • Ability to trouble shoot and test new laboratory equipment and laboratory procedures. 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
  • Requires lifting of objects (mannequins, equipment, etc.) up to 35 lbs.
  • Requires work with science and medical equipment including latex based products 
  • Requires occasional inter-campus travel or travel to local stores to pick up supplies

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The Laboratory Coordinator I will have administrative responsibilities as well as some occupational exposure to potential hazards in the academic laboratory work environment.  Working with hazardous chemicals in addition to BSL- Level 1 biohazardous microbes is a common place in CSM science laboratories.
