Advisor, TRIO-SSS STEM Program

ABOUT THIS POSITION

Summary:
The TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) STEM Program, a Title IV (TRIO) program, is funded through the U.S. Department of Education. The .875 FTE (35 hours) SSS STEM Advisor is responsible for working with a caseload of students to provide academic success services to help retain and graduate students. The SSS STEM Advisor works with the SSS staff to meet the goals and objectives of the federally funded grant. Both SSS programs, STEM and Classic, are housed within the Office of Student Success and Engagement within Academic Affairs. Essential duties and responsibilities of the position include participant selection and orientation, develops and monitors Personal Academic Plan of Action (PAPA), provides holistic advising and coaching, maintains data, assists with institutional and community services, facilitates enrichment workshops, trips and assessments, proficiency in federal regulations governing TRIO and SSS STEM programs, represents CMU at state, regional and/or national TRIO association meetings and other duties as assigned.


Education and/or Experience:

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a STEM field, health sciences, social sciences or other related field from an accredited college or university.
  • Two years’ experience in higher education, secondary education or counseling.
  • Previous academic advising, counseling, academic coaching, supplemental instruction and/or teaching experience with diverse students.
  • Ability to participate in and/or attend programs in the evening, on weekends and occasionally a multi-day student trip is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and clearly both verbally and in writing, and work with people at all levels diplomatically and professionally.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.


Preferred:

  • Master’s Degree in STEM field
  • Experience working with community service agencies.
  • Experience coordinating student assessment.
  • Experience with TRIO program(s).
  • Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, Publisher and Adobe Acrobat.
  • Knowledge of and experience with D2L and student management systems preferred.
  • Possess strong attention to detail.
  • Possess a current driver’s license.
  • Experience working with TRIO eligible population.
  • Bilingual
