The board that oversees Moorpark, Oxnard and Ventura colleges has named one of its newest members chairman, passing over Vice Chairman Art Hernandez, who has run afoul of an accreditation committee.
Bernardo Perez was elected chairman of the Ventura County Community College District board Tuesday night, shortly after being sworn in for his first elected term. Perez, who represents Simi Valley and Moorpark, was appointed to a two-year term in 2010.
"I'm looking forward to my next four years as an elected trustee," Perez said after being sworn in.
Perez, who was nominated by Hernandez, was elected chairman on a 5-0 vote.
Before the vote, Trustee Dianne McKay also nominated outgoing Chairman Stephen Blum, who had served in that job for two years. Chairmen typically serve one-year terms.
"We are in unusual times," McKay said. "We have much work to finish, and I believe the steady hand of his leadership would be in the best interest of the district."
The board did not vote on Blum's nomination because Perez was named chairman first.
After electing Perez, the board chose McKay as vice chairwoman on a 5-0 vote.
