Greg Gillespie named president of Ventura College
A seasoned college administrator with a background in crop science has been named the new president of Ventura College.
Greg Gillespie, who was selected from five finalists for the job, is now vice president for instruction and student services at Yavapai College in Prescott, Ariz. He succeeds Robin Calote, who is retiring in June.
Gillespie “will be an asset to Ventura College,” said Jamillah Moore, chancellor of the Ventura County Community College District.
“He has a wealth of experience,” said Moore, who selected Gillespie for the job after interviewing the finalists Wednesday. “He’s got a collaborative style with faculty, staff and students. I expect he’ll probably be picking up and carrying forward the college’s partnerships in the business community.”
The district board announced the decision after meeting in closed session this evening. The board also authorized Moore to begin negotiations with Gillespie. The current presidents of Moorpark, Oxnard and Ventura colleges earn $183,383 a year.
Gillespie said his immediate goal when he starts the job in June will be getting to know people.
“I want to spend time developing relationships with the campus and the community, spend a lot of time getting to know people,” he said. “I want to work together to identify the areas we can prioritize as a college. ... What we’re able to accomplish happens a lot because of the partnerships we’re able to develop and the relationships we establish.”
