Jon Connolly named president of Sussex County Community College
Sussex County Community College’s (SCCC) Board of Trustees has announced that Dr. Jon Connolly will be appointed as the sixth president of the College.
The College search committee reviewed 46 applications for the presidential position over the past several months. The search began when Dr. Paul Mazur, fifth president of SCCC, announced his retirement. Dr. Mazur served as the president of the college for four years.
Several candidates were passed through to the next phase of the selection process along with Dr. Connolly. The Board of Trustees met on September 4 in a special meeting to discuss each candidate. The board chose Dr. Connolly as the candidate with whom they would negotiate a contract for the presidency. The appointment and contract will be on the September 22 board meeting agenda for action.
A letter to the College from Judge Lorraine Parker, Board Chair:
Dear Faculty, Staff and Administrators,
On behalf of the Board of Trustees, we are excited to announce that the new President of Sussex County Community is Dr. Jon Connolly. Dr. Connolly comes to us from Kennebec Valley Community College in Maine, where he has been Vice President and Academic Dean. He earned his undergraduate degree in biology from Colby College in Maine, his Masters in Forest Science from Yale University and his PhD in Biological Sciences from the University of Maine. During his extensive career in community colleges, he served as Interim President of Sheridan and Gillette Colleges of the Northern Wyoming community college district. He taught biology at the University of Maine, Allegheny College in Pennsylvania and Colby College in addition to serving as a teaching assistant and guest lecturer at Yale. Dr. Connolly is a “Jersey boy”, having been born and raised in Morris County. We anticipate that he will begin his term as President of Sussex County Community College on or about November 1.
The Board of Trustees extends its sincerest thanks to the Presidential Search Committee, consisting of faculty, staff, administrators, members of the Board of Trustees and members of the community at large, and especially to the Committee Chair, Dr. Rosalie Lamonte. The members of the Search Committee worked hard to narrow the field from 46 applicants to the final five candidates, each of whom visited the campus for two days during the past two weeks for interviews with constituent groups, and the Board. We thank all who participated in the constituent group interviews, especially the members of the community, the Freeholders and Senator Oroho.
We greatly appreciate the excellent assistance provided to us by Liz Rocklin and Jesse Thompson of RH Perry & Associates, our search consultants. Liz and Jesse did an exceptional job of gathering such a well-qualified field of candidates. They were continually available to us to answer questions and provide guidance during the lengthy and extensive search process.
Dr. Connolly brings a new energy, optimism and an era of excellence to SCCC. Under his leadership we will be the college of FIRST choice in Sussex County.
