An Indiana man who serves as the vice chancellor of enrollment management and student services at Purdue University North Central in Westville, Ind., has been appointed president of Eastern Maine Community College in Bangor.
Lawrence Barrett was unanimously approved for the position Wednesday during a meeting of the Maine Community College System board of trustees at Northern Maine Community College in Presque Isle.
Barrett will replace Dr. Joyce Hedlund, who has served as EMCC president for the past 16 years. She will become the president of Washington County Community College in Calais later this summer. Barrett will assume his new post on Aug. 23.
John Fitzsimmons, president of the community college system, called Barrett a “terrific match for EMCC.”
“He brings high energy and is someone who has great administrative experience and cares deeply about the students,” he said. “He has a lot to offer.”
Board member Carol Epstein headed the search committee for Hedlund’s replacement. She said the committee members put in a tremendous effort during the search and they received “many wonderful candidates” for the position.
