O'dell Owens, a county coroner, selected as new president of Cincinnati State Technical & Community College

O’dell Owens knows he’s an unconventional choice as the new president of Cincinnati State Technical & Community College.
After Cincinnati State trustees officially selected him Wednesday afternoon, he was ready to try and prove he’s the right choice.
“I know what some people are going to say,” said the North Avondale resident, who will resign as Hamilton County coroner and start at Cincinnati State after Labor Day.
“They’ll say, ‘Cincinnati State, you’re taking a risk. He doesn’t have the skill set. He won’t make it.’ But isn’t that like Cincinnati State? You take the kids people say are high-risk. You take the kids people say won’t make it.”
Owens, 62, hasn’t negotiated a contract yet but said “that won’t be a problem.” He earns $118,513 as coroner and the last permanent president at Cincinnati State, Ron Wright, earned $187,604.
He will replace Interim President John Henderson, who has served since Wright resigned in 2007.
