Bristol Community College President Jack Sbrega will be honored next week as the Fall River Area Chamber of Commerce’s outstanding citizen of the year.
Sbrega, who has led the college for a decade, during which it has had a 71-percent jump in enrollment, said receiving the honor is “really a humbling experience.” He’s the 44th person to receive the award, which will be presented at a banquet on Nov. 9.
“It’s something I’ll always cherish and treasure,” Sbrega said Monday. “I really feel strongly that it’s an award for all of BCC” because of what the college has done for the community.
Sbrega, a Fall River resident, was “head and shoulders above the field” of candidates, said Curt Nelson, chairman of the chamber’s board of directors. In addition to his “tremendous” work at BCC, Nelson said, Sbrega has served a long list of organizations, including the Bristol Workforce Investment Board, the Fall River and New Bedford chambers of commerce, the United Way, New Bedford Youth Council, SouthCoast Development Partnership and others.
“When you look at his record for community service, it’s quite impressive,” said Carl Hetzler, president of H&S Tool and Engineering and a former chairman of the chamber’s board of directors.
