April 29, 2011
Donald Cannon has been named the new president of Chattahoochee Valley Community College, the Phenix City school announced Thursday.
Since 2007, Cannon has been vice president of administrative services at DeKalb Technical College in metro Atlanta. He starts July 1.
In his cover letter applying for the job, Cannon said community colleges like CVCC are “vital in the recovery of the economy and the future success of the nation.”
“I’ve always felt that the community college is the linchpin, as we continue to come out of this economic situation,” he told the Ledger-Enquirer on Thursday. “It’s the responsibility of not just CVCC but all community colleges -- to pinpoint careers and work with businesses and industry to make those matches.
“Our main mission is to find people where they are on the educational spectrum and take them where they need to be,” he said.
CVCC has about 1,700 students.
The school’s previous president, Laurel Blackwell, appointed president in 2003, retired in December. Philip Cleveland served as interim president until Feb. 28 and has since returned to Wallace State Community College in Hanceville, Ala.
