Surry Community College in North Carolina names David Shockley president

The Board of Trustees of Surry Community College met on Monday, September 19, 2011 to elect and formally appoint Dr. David R. Shockley as Surry’s sixth President. Dr. Shockley most recently served as Executive Vice President of Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute in Hudson, NC where he served as Chief Operating Officer/Chief Academic Officer responsible for internal operations of the multi-campus college.
Dr. Shockley received a BS and MA in Industrial Technology from Appalachian State University and his PhD in Education from North Carolina State University. Dr. Shockley served in the US Marine Corp Reserves before beginning his career in higher education at Appalachian State University in 1993. He joined the staff of Caldwell Community College in 1996 as Director of Computer Services and continued in service at Caldwell becoming Vice President of Student Services in 2004 and Executive Vice President in 2006.
Dr. Shockley served as a leader in establishing innovative instructional programs at CCC&TI including: Institute of Sustainable Technology, Business Administration: Logistics Management, International Business including exchange programs with Brazilian colleges, Certified VMware IT Academy, and Certified Regional Cisco Networking Academy. In 2007, Dr. Shockley received the E.M. Dudley Achievement Award presented to a CCC&TI employee who has excelled in service to the college. Dr. Shockley brings his knowledge of Information Technology, Student Services, Academic Programs and Budget Management to Surry Community College as the school approaches its 50th Anniversary in 2014 of serving the higher education needs of Surry and Yadkin counties. Dr. Shockley will assume presidential duties at Surry on January 3, 2012.
