South Carolina clears the way for Spartanburg Community College to finalize deal for new downtown campus
The state cleared the way Tuesday for Spartanburg Community College and the county to finalize a deal for a new downtown college campus.
The S.C. State Budget and Control Board issued final approval Tuesday for the college’s purchase of the Evans Building on South Dean Street from the county. The college will pay $3.34 million for the historic building and will transfer ownership of the Deat Building on Fairforest Road to the county.
The county houses several offices in the Dent Building and has been paying the college $90,000 annually in rent for several years.
Spartanburg Community College President Para Jones said renovations on the 110,000-square-foot building will likely begin by summer 2011 and classes will start at the campus by spring 2013.
About 2,000 students are expected to take classes there and another 1,000 students will take non-credit courses, said Cheri Anderson-Hucks, college spokeswoman.
