|While two north Alabama community colleges have announced plans in the last week to shutter their athletic programs, Calhoun Community College is not considering taking that step.
Last week, Bevill State Community College in Jasper said it was dissolving its athletic department. And today, Northwest Shoals Community College in Muscle Shoals made the same announcement.
Those schools, however, fielded teams in more sports than Calhoun. The state's largest community college with an enrollment of more than 12,000 students between the Decatur and Huntsville campuses, Calhoun has only baseball and fast-pitch softball.
"At this time, we have no plans to close our athletic programs," Janet Martin, assistant to Calhoun President Marilyn Beck, told The Times in an email last week.
Bevill State and Northwest Shoals each cited the drop in funding from the state education budget as well as the loss of federal stimulus money.
