San Mateo County Community College District in California plans to close its 4-year old Coastside campus

Four years after it opened, the only Coastside campus offering higher education will close at the end of the year, according to officials with the San Mateo County Community College District.

Budget constraints will force the College of San Mateo to pull out of the space it leases at Shoreline Station in downtown Half Moon Bay, which includes two classrooms and a computer lab, said Jim Keller, formerly a district executive vice chancellor who was recently appointed interim president of Cañada College.

The community college district may still offer some limited evening classes at Half Moon Bay High School starting in spring, which would be less expensive to rent, said Ron Andrade, program coordinator for the Coastside office. The College of San Mateo held classes at the high school for many years before district trustees deemed there was enough demand there to expand onto an independent satellite campus.
