Student arrested after posting threatening Twitter message about Des Moines Area Community College

Administrators at Des Moines Area Community College took immediate action last week when a startling message from a social networking site was discovered.

It said: “Who wants to shoot up the DMACC Ankeny campus the same time I shoot up the Urban campus?”

Police were waiting for Paul Richard George, 18, on Friday, the moment he showed up for his second day of college at 1100 Seventh St. in Des Moines.

George was charged with first-degree harassment.

Police Detective Gregory Morse said the message was sent out over Twitter, a popular instant messaging system.

Rob Denson, president of DMACC, said, “Security staff jumped on it right away and the police were involved. Now it’s in the hands of police.”

Denson said, “Subsequent investigation shows it was not a serious threat. The words were bad. But when they saw the student and family and his background it did not appear to be a credible threat. It’s unlikely any action would have been taken. But we have a zero tolerance policy in matters of this kind.”
