Under pressure from students, Bergen Community College trustees give voting status to alumni member
Bergen Community College trustee Cid Wilson The board of trustees at Bergen Community College unanimously granted voting status to their alumni member Tuesday, following months of pressure from a student-led campaign for the move.
Chairman E. Carter Corriston's announcement that the measure before the board was met enthusiastically by students who had come out wearing T-shirts reading "Educate and empower me."
The students were more subdued than they were at the previous meeting, where they demonstrated against the board's move to table the vote, but many still had concerns about the specific wording of the resolution.
Tuesday's resolution elevates the current alumni member, John Zeuner, to voting status for the remainder of his term and extends that same status to the incoming alumni trustee, but does not specify that future alumni members will retain the right to vote.
