Cindy Hess named chief academic officer at Tulsa CC
Tulsa Community College has named Cindy Hess as its new senior vice president and chief academic officer.
Hess, currently the college’s associate dean for communications at the Southeast Campus, will assume her new role April 1. She will take the position just as the college rolls out a new strategic plan next month.
Hess, who worked for TCC for a decade starting in the mid-90s, returned to Tulsa last year after spending time in leadership roles at community colleges in North Carolina and Missouri.
Before making the jump to higher education, Hess taught high school English at Jenks Public Schools.
She said it was during her last few years at Jenks — while she was involved with a team of faculty in a project that used new teaching techniques for students — that she realized the power that administrators had to create environments that supported faculty and staff in performing their roles.
“That’s when I moved over,” she said.
Hess has been in the higher education field for more than 20 years.
“I love the community college concept and what it does for students,” Hess said.
She said community colleges are about providing opportunities to as many people as possible, including focusing on first-generation college students. Community colleges often introduce students to “higher aspirations for themselves.”
