In March of 2016, Dr. Beebe was recognized as the “People’s President” for his community work and service in Barrio Logan, one of the oldest San Diego neighborhoods.
Prior to leading San Diego City College, Dr. Beebe spent eight years as President of the San Diego Continuing Education (SDCE), one of the largest separately accredited institutions of its kind in the nation, that serves 45,000 students at seven San Diego Community College District campuses and many other community and neighborhood sites. One of the hallmarks of Dr. Beebe’s service has been his efforts in establishing non-credit to credit pathways to assist students to transition to higher education.
Upon hearing of his selection, Dr. Beebe said “I am honored and humbled to be selected as Santa Barbara City College’s next Superintendent/President. I look forward to building on the strong foundation already established by the leaders that preceded me, including Dr. Lori Gaskin. I understand what a special place this college is and its importance to the community. We will work together to build on the college’s strong traditions of excellence and its commitment to the community. I am eager to listen and engage with the campus, the SBCC Foundation and with the local community to foster strong relationships.“
Retiring President Dr. Lori Gaskin said "I appreciate the fine work of the Board of Trustees, the Superintendent/President Screening Committee, and college staff whose collective efforts over these past many months are resulting in the next leader of this exceptional institution. I am deeply committed to SBCC and our students and know that the college is in good hands with Dr. Beebe. He will capably advance the commitment to academic excellence that has long been the hallmark of SBCC."
SBCC has been conducting a search for a successor to Dr. Lori Gaskin, who announced her retirement effective August 1, 2016. An extensive nationwide search was conducted by a national executive search and management consulting firm to recruit candidates. The SBCC District Board of Trustees was also assisted by a search committee made up of college administrators, faculty and classified staff, students, a representative for the Foundation for SBCC, and community members. The Search Committee screened the initial pool of 42 candidates, interviewed 12 and forwarded the finalists to the Board of Trustees. The four finalists participated in a public forum on April 25, 2016.
The SBCC Board of Trustees will hold a closed session meeting on Tuesday, May 3, 2016 to finalize contract negotiations.
