Challengers lining up to fill open trustee seats at Contra Costa Community College District

San Jose Mercury News

Two political newcomers and a campaign veteran will face off in November against a pair of incumbent trustees in the Contra Costa Community College District.

Incumbent Sheila Grilli, of Martinez, is being challenged by Martinez resident Evelyn Centeno and Bay Point resident Greg Enholm, who lost to Grilli in 2006. Grilli has served three four-year terms on the board.

Danville resident John Nejedly has served four terms and will be challenged by Denise Tully, of Concord. Richmond resident John Marquez is running unopposed for the West County seat held by one-term trustee Tony Gordon, who isn't seeking re-election.

The three-college district is in significantly better financial shape than it was when Grilli and Nejedly ran for re-election in 2006. Unable for several years to meet state requirements for its budget reserves, the district has built a healthy rainy-day fund over the past four years.

Both incumbents touted their fiscal success and said the reserve has helped cushion the blow of state budget cuts.
