Academic Advising Specialist (Full-time)

Job Description

The position of the Academic Advising Specialist is responsible for providing individual and group academic advising and student success support such as tutoring, study skills strategies, and test-taking skills strategies.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Plan and prepare structured academic advising and tutoring activities using alternative learning strategies that provide the necessary assistance for students to succeed in their educational program.

  • Creates assessments and works with Academic Support Director to develop action plans to support students on academic alert, academic probation, other academically at-risk students, and other students who exhibit academically at-risk factors.

  • Collects data for analysis of student achievement.

  • Develop attendance and tutoring reports that include:

  • First Quarter, Midterm, Third Quarter, and Final Grade Tracking, correlated with the Colleges retention services.

  • Final grades of students who utilize retention services in correlation to students who do not use the services.

  • Overall course withdrawal rates of students who utilize retention services in correlation to students who do not use the services.

  • Semester analysis of new retention strategies implemented or continued.

  • Assist drop-in students with various coursework, study skills, and test-taking tips, as well as review academic work on an as-needed basis.

  • Assist in training and mentoring peer tutors and coaches.

  • Assist students and instructors with electronic tutor programs.

  • Assist in data collection of students receiving services.

  • Develop files and keep accurate, complete records, regarding contacts and assistance provided to students.

  • Submit regular data reports in the appropriate time frame and in digital format to the Academic Success Coordinator and Dean of Academic Operations, Policies, and Supports as required.

  • Create tutoring sessions for student groups.

  • Willingness to sit in classrooms to build relationships with instructors and students.

  • Maintain good communication and work closely with faculty, administrators, students, and supervisor.

  • Develop rapport with students and be proactive in identifying needs of students to include other student services available at Louisburg College.

  • Interface with CAMS and D2L Brightspace applications to provide data entry for Academic Advising for various campus departments and academic advisors.

  • Maintain strict confidentiality of information related to academic/instructional records, student records, personnel, and organizational issues.

  • Schedule and inform students of tutoring sessions through multiple channels of communication.

  • Maintain a clean and safe environment conducive to improving academic learning and working on computers with technology.

  • Demonstrated commitment and ability to develop equitable and inclusive learning environments.

  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree with 10 years or more experience in an educational setting.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Masters degree

  • High level of competency with various forms of technology

  • A strong commitment to delivering quality services supporting the community college and its curriculum

  • Excellent written and oral communication, customer service, organization, and collaboration skills

  • Effective problem-solving abilities

  • Evidence of ability to work independently and collaboratively, multi-task, and prioritize

  • Experience working with culturally diverse populations

  • Familiarity with FERPA and applicable laws and regulations regarding student record, confidentiality, and students rights and responsibilities.
