Advisor - Recruitment Communications

Status / FLSA Status: FT / Exempt

Reports To: Assistant Dean, Student Services

PRIMARY FUNCTION: The Student Advisor provides student services in the areas of course and major selection, interpreting and providing testing results, assisting with student retention, student success, probation, college transfer information, degree completion information, and student recruitment.


RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Assists students with college services available to meet individual needs.

2. Coordinates the enrollment of international students.

3. Assists with the coordination, scheduling, and proctoring of assessment testing. May assist with assessment and placement testing in other departments on an "as needed" basis.

4. Provides advisement and consultation for planning student goal attainment, scheduling, course selection for students, college transfer information, enrollment assistance, probation, and other functions of general advising.

5. Assists with student success initiatives.

6. Assists in student orientation, fairs, programs and initiatives to promote student success.

7. Advises and consults non-traditional, diverse, and special populations for support services.

8. Provides agency referrals in crisis situations. Works cooperatively with social service agencies as necessary.

9. Participates in committees, professional development activities and conferences.

10. Assists students with career interest software.

11. Assists with activities for recruiting high school and home school students to Spoon River College including reviewing documents from schools.

12. Assists with presentations before high school groups.

13. Assists in meeting with individuals and small groups of high school students and/or their parents to explain the educational opportunities available and the enrollment process for entry into Spoon River College or other under the terms of agreement with another college.

14. Distributes recruitment materials to interested students and target markets.

15. Coordinates follow-up communication with prospective students from inquiry to enrollment.

16. Coordinates prospective student Spoon River College visits and tours.

17. Tracks student progress, and provides follow-up data.

18. Assists with the College & Transfer Fair.

19. Facilitates orientation sessions, activities, and seminars related to student support services.

20. In cooperation with others, assists with recruitment efforts, including those of staff, faculty, students, and alumni who represent the College and present program information at various functions (e.g., high school visitations, high school and college fairs, high school counselor luncheon/days, college nights, on-campus visits).

21. Evaluates incoming Illinois/IAI college/university transcripts.

22. Assistance with and attendance at commencement is required annually or at minimum on a pre-approved scheduled basis.

23. Establishes effective working relationships between College and area high school counselors and staff.

24. Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: May supervise student employees.

 


QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and/or abilities required. 1. A bachelor's degree in a related field from a regionally accredited institution is required. A masters degree is preferred.

2. Experience working in Student Services at a community college is preferred.

3. Student advising experience is preferred.

4. A current and valid Illinois drivers license with a clear motor vehicle records check (per the colleges definition of an authorized driver) is required.

5. Experience with Microsoft applications and personal computer skills are required with the ability to learn the Spoon River College information system and new programs as technology changes.

6. Must possess a high level of confidentiality and accuracy. Must possess the ability to manage multiple and competing priorities; deal with conflict appropriately; withstand pressure, and remain calm in tense situations. Must possess problem solving skills; flexibility, dependability, and responsibility. Must possess the ability to work in a team centered environment and demonstrate a positive attitude.

7. Must possess organizational abilities, superior interpersonal skills and client service skills, and verbal and written communication skills with the ability to speak before groups.



PHYSICAL DEMANDS / WORK ENVIRONMENT: The physical demands and work environment described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

Physical demands for this position include the ability to regularly sit, use hands and fingers, talk and hear. This position requires limited standing, walking, reaching, stooping / kneeling. Vision requirements for this position include close vision including the ability to view text from a computer monitor. This position requires some driving, the majority of which is within the College district.

Work environment for this position includes typical office environment with no extremes in temperature, noise, and limited physical risk.
