Position Summary

The Opportunity: Skagit Valley College (SVC) is seeking qualified equity-minded applicants for full-time, tenure track faculty positions in the Human Services program on the Mount Vernon campus. The successful candidate, who has obtained mastery and demonstrates leadership in the Human Services field, will demonstrate exceptional classroom skills, enthusiasm for the subject matter, and an inclusive and equity-driven approach to teaching and learning. SVC seeks teacher-scholars whose activities complement and inform their teaching.

SVC Human Services faculty teach an equivalent of 15-18 contact hours/week per quarter (approximately 3-4 classes) and participate in College service and student advising. This position is expected to begin in Fall Quarter, September 2024.

This position is primarily based at the Mount Vernon Campus; however, instructors may be called upon to teach at the Whidbey Island Campus located in Oak Harbor, or to teach students via online instruction.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Incorporate an equity-minded approach to teaching and learning;
  • Conduct ongoing development, assessment, and revision of curriculum that reflects innovative and inclusive pedagogy and advances in Human Services;
  • Work collaboratively with SVC faculty from other fields to develop appropriate curricula that reflect the diversity of student experience;
  • Create a positive learning environment for students using diverse teaching methods to support and enhance student success;
  • Collaborate with other disciplines to increase enrollment and support student retention in the program with a focus on ameliorating equity gaps;
  • Develop, monitor, and assess student learning outcomes and fully participate in the colleges program review process;
  • Develop, assess, and analyze program outcomes for the purpose of program improvement and enhanced student learning;
  • Conduct program outreach by leading program briefing sessions for prospective students, assisting with marketing and recruitment activities and leading student application reviews;
  • Collaborate, facilitate, and participate in advisory board meetings;
  • Participate in unit, department and other College activities, including College governance;
  • Perform other related duties and special projects as assigned;
  • Teach online, hybrid, or classroom-based classes as required;
  • Work collaboratively as part of the Human Services department team;
  • Practice multicultural understanding and foster equity;
  • Participate in division/department and other College activities, including College governance.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Ability to maintain partnerships and interagency community connections;
  • Engage students through innovative instructional approaches such as service learning projects, and contextualized learning;

  • Support students in accessing appropriate instructional and non-instructional services to facilitate student retention, completion and academic success for all students;
  • Adapt to a variety of teaching situations, including interdisciplinary learning communities, and online and hybrid modalities;
  • Express appropriate awareness of the history of underrepresented groups to promote an equitable work and learning environment;
  • Recruit and inspire diverse student populations to embrace learning and facilitate completion;
  • Work and interact effectively with colleagues, staff, students, administrators and other various cultural and socio-economic backgrounds in support of SVC's commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion;

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Teaching experience in education or industry (to include workshops, seminars, etc.);
  • Ability to maintain the NAADAC Education Approved Providers standards;
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the Washington State Department of Health SUD accreditation standards and process;
  • Demonstrated actions to promote equitable access and educational achievement of diverse students;
  • Strong technological skills
Desired Qualifications:
  • Masters degree, equivalent or higher, in Human Services, Social Work, Behavioral Health, Counseling or closely related field(s);
  • Recent work experience in a behavioral health, substance use disorder, counseling environment, or closely related human services profession;
  • Teaching experience in a community college setting or related; Experience effectively teaching diverse student populations;
  • Experience training or teaching adults.
  • Experience teaching online using an industry-standard LMS such as Canvas.
  • Experience teaching any courses offered within the Human Services department.
  • Three (3) or more years of teaching experience in a higher education setting.
  • Experience implementing practices guided by critical pedagogy or other equity pedagogies;
  • Multilingual/Bilingual in English and Spanish, including the ability to read, write, and speak in Spanish at an advanced/fluent speaker level;
  • Demonstrated commitment to collaborative teaching and learning.
  • Active Washington Substance Use Disorder Professional Credential in good standing.
    • Professionals with the completed course work and internship hours that are only pending the passing of the Washington DOH State test AND Providers licensed in one of the qualified states with the intention to apply for equivalency per SB 5054 to establish licensing in WA are encouraged to apply. Must have the ability to gain WA credentials within 1 year of hire;

 

Salary, Benefits, Conditions of Employment, Application Procedure

 

Salary and Benefits:

  • Initial base annual salary placement for 2024-2025 ranges from $72,818 to $97,091 for a standard 172-day contract. The College has a negotiated faculty wage scale in which placement on the salary structure is in accordance with the SVC Federation of Teachers Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  • A standard 172-day contract is written annually from September to June. Late contracts will be prorated based on work days remaining in the contract year.
  • This position is exempt from the overtime pay requirements of The Fair Labor Standards Act.
  • This is a union-represented position subject to a Collective Bargaining Agreement. The College has a negotiated faculty wage scale in which placement on the salary structure is under the SVC Federation of Teachers Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  • Salary, retirement, medical, and insurance benefits are provided under state regulations and may be subject to change per legislative mandates and collective bargaining agreements. Additional information on benefits can be found at https://fortress.wa.gov/hca/pebbhealthplan/compare.aspx.
 
Conditions of Employment:
