Under the supervision of the Dean of Special Programs and Grants, performs general counseling with a diverse, multi-ethnic population of urban community college students. Assignment will include academic, career and personal counseling, special populations such as high school dual enrollment and adult learners; teaching; and performs the following general and specific
functions:

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive counseling services to dual enrollment and transitioning high school students and adult learners including academic, career, and personal counseling on a drop-in and appointment basis both day and evening
  • Provide individual and group counseling to current dual enrollment and transitioning high school students and adult learners
  • Provide orientations, workshops, and other activities to support dual enrollment and transitioning high school students and adult learners getting information and support related to college success
  • Teach Dual Enrollment courses located at feeder high school campuses and/or community-based organizations
  • Teach college success and career and personal development courses in the day or evening
  • Collaborate with Dual Enrollment program administrators and staff to implement guided pathways for high school students and adult learners
  • Assist in the development, implementation, and assessment of Dual Enrollment annual faculty training
  • Assist students in understanding educational options, clarify educational goals, engage in educational and career planning, participate in the development of student educational plans (SEPs) and course selection
  • Target underrepresented and marginalized students for transfer and student success services and support
  • Participate in outreach activities and events in classrooms both on and off campus, at local high schools, adult schools, and community agencies
  • Utilize and keep abreast of advanced counseling methods and student development theories which include integrating technology to support student learning and career objectives
  • Participate in meetings, training, and other professional development activities to maintain the expertise required to provide accurate and reliable information and support to dual enrollment and transitioning high school students
  • Provide educational planning assistance for transfer students with an emphasis on equity groups/ underrepresented and underprepared students from educationally disadvantaged backgrounds.
  • Provides general counseling which includes providing students with information and advice regarding educational programs, occupational programs and degree and transfer requirements.
  • Assists students in the selection of majors, careers, and the development of student educational plans.
  • Assists students with the decision-making process and exploration of alternatives in regards to college adjustment, personal growth and development, social adjustments and goals.
  • Participates in the College-wide Matriculation Program.
  • Administers vocational/career assessment instruments and interprets findings with students.
  • Teaches classes that may include orientation to college, college preparedness, career and life planning, college success, study skills, career exploration, preparation for college/university transfer, human development and/or counseling; and facilitates small group discussions and workshops. Teaching may include up to fifty (SO) percent of the counseling load.
  • Represent the Counseling Department on college and district committees.
  • Participates in outreach and training activities with high schools, four-year institutions and/or community agencies.
  • Provides online academic advising.
  • Provides professional service that includes counseling, advising, evaluation of transcripts, attendance at meetings and participation in the governance structure of the college and the district.
  • Responsible for continuously updating professional competency through post-graduate and/or in-service training.
  • Adheres to the schedule that has been developed with the Department Chairpersons, which may include individual student appointments, drop-in assignments, workshops, and weekend and/or evening assignments;
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by the college.


The counseling schedule may include evening or weekend hours as part of contract assignment. Counselors are expected to use and keep abreast of advanced counseling methods, including the use of current and future technologies, to support student learning and career objectives.
The Counselor is also responsible for providing a full professional service week that may include, but is not limited to:

  • Maintenance of office hours;
  • Performing departmental duties such as program and curriculum development, evaluation and revision, and selecting appropriate program materials, and working with administrators and other faculty to develop a comprehensive pre collegiate program;
  • Participation in professional activities such as departmental and campus committee work, faculty peer evaluations, staff meetings and participation in the governance structure of the College and District;
  • Pursuing professional growth activities to remain current;
  • Performing professional outreach activities (e.g., working with administrators and other faculty, as part of course development and depending on need, by participating in an industry advisory committee for a program, working with inter-segmental education partners-such as high school, adult school and other colleges-and industry partners to design and implement effective basic skills curricula and career pathways in the discipline, etc.); and
  • Performing other related duties as assigned by the College.


Minimum Qualifications

1. Possession of a Masters Degree from an accredited college or university in Counseling, Rehabilitation Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Counseling Psychology, Guidance Counseling, Educational Counseling, Social Work, Marriage and Family Therapy and Marriage, Family and Child Counseling or Career Development;

OR

2. Possession of a California license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT);
OR

3. May submit a fully satisfied lifetime California Community College Counselor Credential.
(California credentials were no longer issued after July 1, 1990).
OR

4. The equivalent qualifications.
(Candidates who claim equivalency must provide conclusive evidence, as clear and reliable on the college transcripts as required
on the District Equivalency Application Form. Refer to the Equivalency Procedures below. This is not a process to waive the
minimum qualifications.)

5. Understanding of, sensitivity to, and respect for the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity,
sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

Desirable Qualifications


  • At least two (2) years of community college experience with a diverse, multi-ethnic student population.
  • Experience teaching counseling-related courses and/or conducting workshops.
  • Ability to write, speak and converse in both English or Spanish or an Asian language.
  • Demonstrated individual and group counseling skill utilizing development methodologies with under-prepared and basic skills
community college students.
  • Experience using computers, multi-media and internet in counseling or related activities.
  • Experience with counseling high school dual enrolled students, transitioning high school students, and/or adult learners.
