Full job description

Counselor/Advisor is responsible for working collaboratively with faculty, staff, students, and the community to provide vision and leadership for the mental health of the campus and community. This position also supports the advising functions of Student Services. The Counselor/Advisor will report to the Director of Student Success and Academic Advising, with the following specific responsibilities:
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
A. Provide leadership and direction for the mental care, counseling, and development of students.
B. Conducts crisis assessment and intervention for urgent/walk-in appointments
C. Serve as an integral member of the CARE team.
D. Develop positive relationships and collaborative partnerships with leaders of schools, businesses, industry, health care organizations, and other community agencies within the service region that can provide third party services for students, faculty, and staff.
E. Provide exceptional and innovative academic advising services to prospective and current students, individually or in groups, about college policies and programs of study.
F. Advise student about the possible consequences of academic decisions and provide guidance to individual support services.
G. Assist with all phases of student recruitment, such as high school visitations, career fairs, college days, open houses, and informational sessions.
H. Prepare formal data collection reports in a timely manner.
I. Attend program advisory meetings as assigned.
J. Review, interpret, and evaluate applicant test scores and other relevant information to determine the academic status of prospective and current students.
K. Participate in ongoing professional development appropriate to functions of the position and professional interests.
L. Maintain a clean and safe work area.
M. Perform other duties which support the mission and initiatives of the College.
N. Monitor and follow-up on early alerts for students on assigned caseload.
O. Identify appropriate resources to provide students with wraparound services.
P. Teach at least one section of ACA, college student success, at least one semester per year.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common business correspondence and reports.
  • Ability to articulate professional responses to common inquiries and/or complaints from students, faculty, staff, or the public at-large.
  • Ability to write using proper grammar and punctuation.
  • Ability to effectively present information to management, students, faculty, staff, or the public at-large.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
  • Ability to design and implement a fiscal budget

REASONING ABILITY:
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:
  • Understanding of and commitment to the unique nature and role of the College and to the philosophy of the community college system.
Required Qualifications
Master Degree in counseling, school counseling, must hold a National Certified Counselor credential; experience/proficiency in the use of integrated software (Microsoft Word and Excel), effective oral and written communication skills, and the ability to coordinate and prioritize duties
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in a post-secondary educational setting. Knowledge of ADA and disability services programs.
