Position Summary
KCC is seeking to fill the role of Adjunct Instructor, Communication for the Prison Education Program (PEP). The position will serve the Lakeland Correctional Facility population in Coldwater, Michigan. Instructors will be responsible for conducting face-to-face instruction on-site inside the prison, during weekday and/or weeknight evening hours. This part-time, adjunct position reports to the Chair, Arts and Communication and will be responsible for instruction and delivery according to course outcomes in Communication.

Specialized training is required prior to being able to instruct in the program, including up to about ten (~10) hours of training per Michigan Department of Corrections (MDOC)
  • Online training (4-5 hours)
  • In-person training (1 hour)
  • Facility tour and PEP orientation (1 hour)

Physical Demands
The job responsibilities are performed in a prison facility, working directly with a population of students that are incarcerated. Travel by car required. The job has intermittent periods during which continuous physical exertion is required, such as walking, standing, sitting, stooping, bending, climbing, lifting material or equipment, some of which may be heavy or awkward (8 – 45 pounds). Typically requires regular use of one or more physical senses of medium intensity and long duration. Must meet reasonable deadlines, quotas or demands for accuracy, and may be involved in some mildly unpleasant situations.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Earned Masters Degree in Communication from an accredited institution at the time of application; attach unofficial transcript showing coursework completed and degree conferred.
  • Earned Masters Degree with eighteen (18) graduate credits in Communication from an accredited institution at the time of application; attach unofficial transcript showing coursework completed and degree conferred.
  • Teaching experience.
  • Significant coursework in Communication.
  • Must be a resident of Michigan or Indiana.

Preferred but not Required
  • Evidence of community college teaching experience
  • Experience working with an underserved population.

Proposed Salary
Based on current Board-approved rates.

Essential Function
INSTRUCTION

Description
  • Provide face-to-face instruction in an in-person cohort model within the prison environment without the use of technology.
  • Teach college-level Communication courses in accordance with College policies and procedures.
  • Teach to departmental syllabus and course outcomes using departmental textbooks and other materials.
  • Teaching includes explaining concepts to students, hands-on teaching demonstrations of various processes, assisting students with questions, and grading tests.
  • Prepare assignments, tests, and activities as needed per course learning objectives.
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to diverse populations.
  • Work cooperatively with colleagues.
  • The instructor will also be responsible for some administrative duties such as maintaining equipment, advising students, preparing materials, and orienting new student to the appropriate subject course content.
