Assistant Professor of Computer Science

Job Description

Description

The Department of Computer Science at St. Bonaventure University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor to begin in either January or August of 2026.

About the Department

We are a Computer Science department at a small liberal arts university. Therefore, we highly value interdisciplinary work that explores how computing affects society and individuals. The small faculty size means that a new colleague will have the opportunity to significantly contribute to and shape the future direction of the department. The department offers BS degrees in Computer Science and Data Science, as well as a BS and MS in Cybersecurity.

Current department research interests include AI & religion, collaborative data systems for social impact, natural language processing, and cybersecurity. The department is housed in one of the newest buildings on campus, the Walsh Science center. The building also houses Chemistry and Biology labs. The department recently received a $450,000 Federal grant to build a Cyber Operations Center which includes a powerful three node virtual cluster environment for teaching and research, as well as a dedicated server for AI & machine learning that has a 32-core CPU, 768GB RAM, and 4x 48GB NVidia GPUs.

Examples of Duties

Expectations

This position carries a normal teaching load of four courses per semester. (Since many department courses include lab sections, this typically translates to 3 lecture sections and 1-2 associated lab sections per semester.) Faculty members are expected to demonstrate a strong commitment to college-level teaching excellence, have an active research agenda, participate in student advising, and engage in department and university service, particularly connected to AI literacy and pedagogy.

Typical Qualifications

Qualifications

Applicants must have a PhD in Computer Science or a closely related field. ABD candidates are welcome to apply but must have completed the PhD by the start date.

The position is expected to teach undergraduate courses and conduct research primarily in the areas of artificial intelligence and machine learning. Interdisciplinary work is strongly desired. The candidate will also be expected to have the necessary expertise to teach courses in two or more of the following areas: introductory programming (Python/Java), databases, networks, computer organization, operating systems, software engineering, and cybersecurity.

Applicants must have an interest in teaching and advising undergraduate students, as well as potentially supervising their research. An understanding and concern of how computing affects society & individuals, which is a core concern of the department, is also desired.

Previous teaching experience, especially at a liberal arts institution, would be particularly welcome, and industry experience in any area of computing is also highly respected. Due to the small size of the department, the faculty values individuals who are excited to collaborate on teaching, research, and service.

Materials to Submit

Applicants should submit the following:

  • Letter of application that addresses the candidates commitment to teaching and areas of research
  • Curriculum vitae
  • Contact information for three references

The review of applications will begin on July 31, 2025, and continue until the position is filled.
